ACTORS

Death Disco Club, the city's New Wave hotspot, is celebrating its 10 year anniversary with the first Greek post-punk/synthpop/darkwave festival. The Death Disco Open Air Festival will bring goth-heads out of the batcave for two days of sun and dark music under the Athenian summer sky.

Among other bands, the ACTORS are about to perform in Athens for the very first time. Ahead of their performance, Basement spoke to Jason Corbett.

Enjoy!

The Basement: Hello guys! Thank you for this chat. Who are The Actors? Please, introduce yourselves.

Jason Corbett - Vocals + Guitar

Shannon Hemmett - Synth + Vocals

Kendall Wooding - Bass + Vocals

Adam Fink - Drums

The Basement: How would you describe your music to someone that has never listened to your work before?

We joke that it’s post-post-punk. We have elements of Darkwave, New Romantic, and maybe even a little Goth. It’s reminiscent of bands from the past but we remain firmly planted in the present with our own identifiable sound.

The Basement: We are meeting ahead of your performance in Athens, in Death Disco Open Air festival. If am not wrong this is going to be your first time in Greece, is that correct? What aura and essence do you want to capture?

We’re exciting to be coming to Greece for the first time. We bring our best to every show. We will do the same for Death Disco! It’s going to be a good time.

The Basement: Quite recently I read an older interview of the band, mentioning that The name of the band was chosen, in part, because of the way we are expected to act in society. Is that so? We need the full back story of this!

It’s nothing too deep. We are all bound by our desire to belong. We act accordingly.

The Basement: Back in 2021 you set the dancefloor on fire with your sophomore release «Act of Worship». Is new music in the pipeline?

I’m working on a lot of new ACTORS music! We will start releasing new singles by the end of 2023 with a new full-length in 2024.

The Basement: It's been 5 years since " It Will Come to You" came out. What can you say about your present music comparing to that album? Where do you want to go from here on?

Everything I do with ACTORS has been a natural progression and an honest expression of what I want to do as an artist. It’s important the band continues to grow so we can continue to make music and tour to share experiences with our fans.

The Basement: What are your views on music nowadays? Generally and specifically regarding your genre.

I love that there’s so much great music to explore and discover. It’s an unprecedented time for artists to be heard. I don’t think too much about genres. I like good music and there’s lots of it.

The Basement: What most inspires your signwriting? Can you cite influences?

I find inspiration from all over. How things make you feel and finding new ways of expressing those feelings is exciting. I lean towards darker themes.

The Basement: Who of you writes the music? Tell us more about the writing process.

I write and produce our music. I like to start with a beat that gets me excited to riff on. I go from there. It’s important to not censor yourself too early in the process and just let the creative juices flow. The lyrics slowly present themselves as the song begins to unfold.

The Basement: How do you spend time not spent in making music?

I have three cats that I love to spend time with. I like watching movies by great directors. I like to go to the mall like I’m 15 years old again and just wander around.

The Basement: Favourite album of all time?

This is a hard question to answer as it changes year after year. Most influential to me would be Bowie’s Scary Monsters but my favorite album might be Roxy Music Avalon.

The Basement: Thank you guys! Many thanks for your time, it’s been a pleasure.

Thank you for your questions.
